Indian Idol discovery, Meiyang Chang, is slowly but steadily returning to his singing roots. His next cover will release today on his YouTube channel.

Says Chang, “It is a sequel to Yeh Haseen Wadiyan, which I had sung with Himani of T-Series. Then, I have an original coming out soon. I am really excited about that Sufi song, for, by default, that is not my genre (light vocal).”

He has released 4 originals and 7 covers until now. “I have also sung Tukka laga, for the film Jagga Jasoos.”

Chang, who is currently seen in Viu web series, Love Lust and Confusion, admits that for a long time he had moved away from music. “I was doing movies (Badmaash Company, Byomkesh Bakshi), hosting TV shows (Rising Star) and performing gigs. But now, I have decided to concentrate more on singing. Henceforth, I will plan my career moves; gigs have an off season, movie shoots too have breaks; so I’ll devote that time to music. I will also not try to do everything in one go.”

Here, Chang adds, “Later, Viu will also release my Bengali song for the above web series. It will not be for my boss character, but for Rajat Barmecha, the lead drummer character.”

Talking about how digital has changed the music scene, dentist-turned- singer Chang says, “Till a few years back, we were only dependent on labels to take our music, that have their own parameters (not right or wrong ), to pick and choose stuff. But today, we can directly release our own music online. Singers like Sanam, who were the early movers in this space, got lots of advantage, which will slowly percolate to all. Agreed, digital releases might not fetch revenues, but it puts our music out there, which again is very important.”

In closing, Chang says, “As I am an actor as well, web series are the next big rage. I might do a few more. I had earlier done Untag for Voot. Today, thanks to the cheap data revolution, web is giving TV a run for its money. I am not sure of India, but internationally, YouTube communities have really become famous.”

Rock on, Chang!!
