His proposal on the popular web series Permanent Roommates might have been an epic fail but in real life IWMBuzz found his happily ever after with Ekta Kaul. The love birds have the sweetest love story with a bit of filmy romance.
Sumeet was enjoying his single man phase when he first met Ekta on the sets of a show. He instantly wanted to get to know her but did not know how to go about doing it. It was only when Ekta tweeted about the show which prompted Sumeet to take things further. They got talking, he invited her to his play and they went out after.
A date turned into three. But Sumeet was unsure about where they stood. So being his charming, unreserved self, on his third date, he went ahead and clarified it ‘This is a date okay?’ And Ekta of course agreed. And so began the journey of a beautiful relationship!
Although they both have an acting background, the two couldn’t have been more different. Ekta had only been discovered by chance and Sumeet’s entire life revolved around acting. He reveals how once they went out on a movie date to watch La La Land and while he got emotional watching it, Ekta was completely unbothered. And he suddenly thought, “oh no–how’s this going to work?”
When the couple had just started seeing each other, Sumeet was completely at loss on how to impress Ekta. It certainly did not help that Ekta was unbothered with Sumeet’s popularity when he told her about his famous character Mikesh in Permanent Roommates. In fact, before he had mentioned it to her, Ekta didn’t even know about it and used to wonder why people were asking Sumeet for a photo.
But the next time they met, Ekta made sure to watch the entire series of Permanent Roommates. She knew he was famous but that did not affect her in the least. That’s when he knew she was with him for the right reasons!
So when did he realize she was his ‘The One’?
While Sumeet admits it was a culmination of numerous little everyday moments, but he also pinpoints one in particular when he had the sudden realization of ‘I want to marry her’.
Recalling the incident he says, “I rode my bike to a party & had a little bit of bhang. I was in no state to ride. She saw that & took the keys –I thought she was joking! I mean it was a Bullet! But she just got on & off we went, me in the backseat & my lady driving the bullet. I thought then, Man! I’m going to marry her! She’s the one!”
Things were good for a while when they hit a stumbling block. Ekta wanted to move back to Jammu after quitting her acting career. But Sumeet held strong and convinced her to him and their relationship a chance. And Ekta relented.
Sumeet was overjoyed. Not wanting to take any chances, he decided to pop the question on his birthday. And she said ‘Yes’.
Sumeet and Ekta got married last year in Jammu in a simple ceremony on 15th September.
