Virat Kohli, India’s T20 captain, is likely to step down following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 in the United Arab Emirates later this year. Kohli confirmed his decision to step down as T20 captain ahead of the IPL 2021’s second leg, which is now underway in the United Arab Emirates. He’ll also be standing down as captain of his IPL team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, at the end of this season. In 2017, Kohli was named India’s captain for all three formats, succeeding longtime captain MS Dhoni. India has won several historic series both at home and abroad under his leadership, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship final earlier this year. India, on the other hand, has yet to win a major ICC trophy under Kohli’s leadership.
Kohli has elected to stay as a pure batter in the shortest format while leading the side in ODIs and Tests, with back-to-back T20 World Cups slated to be held in 2021 and 2022. The BCCI has yet to name India’s next T20I captain, although Rohit Sharma is expected to succeed Kohli.
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary batsman, and former India captain has named Rohit Sharma as the ideal replacement for Kohli, while KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant have been mentioned as probable candidates for the Indian team’s next vice-captain in T20Is. In both T20Is and ODIs, Rohit is India’s vice-captain.
“Definitely, Rohit Sharma for the next World Cup. With World Cups back-to-back, you don’t want too many changes in captaincy. I am looking at KL Rahul as the vice-captain of the Indian team. I would also keep Rishabh Pant in mind,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Rahul and Pant are the captains of their respective IPL teams. While Rahul is the captain of the Punjab Kings, Pant is the captain of the Delhi Capitals. According to Wion news.
