Senior actress Pratima Kannan who is presently seen in Colors’ Udaan talks about her role and also on the stagnation in terms of content that the small screen is facing.

Newer experiments on TV will succeed only when the taste of viewers will change: Pratima Kannan 1

Senior artist Pratima Kannan is presently enjoying her stint in Colors’ popular show Udaan (Guroudev Bhalla and Dhaval Gada) wherein she plays the scheming politician, Rajeshwari Devi.

Says Pratima, “I have done lot many negative roles, but this one is different. I have used a different speech pattern which makes it all the more interesting. She is a dangerous lady from inside, but appears to be soft before others. She deals with selling girls and also gives them hormone injections. She can do anything for money.”

Pratima feels that newer experiments on TV will only succeed when the taste of viewers will change. “A lot of new stuff is being tried on television, but nothing has been working. As a matter of fact, only the same kinds of shows are working. We cannot have a hold on stories and the ratings are not in our hands. Having said this, we cannot blame the channel or the writer for working on the same kind of concepts. The fact is that there is stagnation with respect to what the people want to see. They are happy seeing the same stuff again and again. So the first change that has to happen is for the taste of the public to change.”

“There were a lot of newer concepts that were on air in the recent time. But none of them worked and it was a very sad story. When you look at the regional market, there are fabulous concepts being made. I wonder why this transformation has not hit the Hindi belt yet,” she exclaims.

Pratima who has had a vast career in films and TV would love to work on the web space. “There are more and more people watching the web-series in today’s times. An actor can get a lot of creative satisfaction on the web. I will love to be part of the platform.”

Ask her if television will slowly fade away with the popularity of web, she denies it saying, “There is a long way to go for this to happen. As of now, housewives and ladies of middle-class households only watch TV. It will take time for such smaller sectors to pick up their mobiles to watch programs. TV will never fade away.”

Well-said, Pratima!!
