In conversation with Apoorva Agnihotri

Though the web canvas is larger than life, it is not OTT like TV: Apoorva Agnihotri

Apoorva Agnihotri, who is returning to Colors show, Bepannaah, will also make a stronger appearance in Season 2 of ALTBalaji’s mature romance web series, Kehne Ko Humsafar Hain. Harry (character name) might have an onscreen romantic love triangle equation with Ananya (Mona Singh) and Rohit (Rohit Roy). The latter, who has two grownup kids, falls out of love with wife, Poonam (Gurdeep Kohli).

“What I like best about our concept is that it not preachy; no man is Lord Ram and no woman is above fault. Let’s face it, even married people can fall out of love or dig someone else, which has its own consequences, and which cannot be brushed under the carpet either.”

“Although our canvas is larger than life, it does not become OTT (over the top) like TV. We also don’t throw cheques of thousands of crores; it never happens in real life.”

“But we need to acknowledge that TV is here to stay and has a different audience profile and demographic. TV still talks to housewives, while web targets the youth crowd.”

Having said that, Apoorva has one major grouse – digital content is unnecessarily sexed up. “We have to let go of a number of shows due to certain types of scenes. And with the story and screenplay already written, they prefer to do away with actors who are uncomfortable rather than rewriting stuff.”

“But yes, leaving this aspect out, web has some great concepts like ours. I also really liked Netflix’s political horror show, Ghoul, starring Radhika Apte.”

Apoorva, who came to TV (Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin) from films (Pardes), says, “Desi film renaissance is on with new concept-driven stories, not dictated by star power, doing well for a while now.”

“If only ticket prices could be brought down, more people would troop into multiplexes; but maybe this is needed to make ROI, given the huge number of prints and other production costs.”

“Last, but not the least, we still have not been able to break the code of how much promotion is enough. For sometimes, people overkill. You already end up seeing the cast so many times on TV or on ground, that it then becomes a drag to eventually watch the movie as well.”
