The series stars Mishkat Varma and Priyanshi Yadav in the lead roles.
Tu Yaa Koi Nahi follows the deeply intense and volatile journey of Maira (played by Priyanshi Yadav), who struggles with a delusional disorder following the tragic loss of her boyfriend, Ansh. Her world is turned upside down when Yash (played by Mishkat Varma in a dual role)—a lighthearted, charming man who looks identical to Ansh—unexpectedly enters her life.
The show delicately explores themes of grief, psychological healing, identity, and ultimate sacrifice as Maira navigates reality versus memory. The best part is that the characters are driven by empathy rather than melodrama.
Creator Ishika Shahi envisioned an emotionally grounded narrative that explores love through the lens of grief, redemption, and healing. Explaining the seamless process of bringing these heavy emotions to life on set, Mishkat Varma said, “One thing I really appreciated about Ishika is that she never over-intellectualised the process. Even though the story had emotional and psychological depth, she explained everything in a very simple, practical way. She communicated even the most complex emotions straightforwardly, which made it much easier for us as actors to perform honestly.”
Expressing his excitement about stepping into a distinct narrative format, lead actor Mishkat Varma shared, “Since this is Rajan sir’s own YouTube platform, Directors Kut, there wasn’t the usual pressure of answering to a television network. There was one clear creative vision, and all we had to do was trust the director and perform accordingly. We had enough time to perform each scene to the best of our abilities without unnecessary stress… Everything was smooth, well planned, and organised, which made the entire experience extremely fulfilling as an actor.”
Stepping into two contrasting personalities requires careful execution, but for Mishkat, a structured process made all the difference on set. “Honestly, it wasn’t as challenging as people might imagine because we shot the series in chronological order. We filmed all of Ansh’s sequences first since he had a heavier stubble and a different hairstyle, and once those portions were complete, we moved on to Yash. So there wasn’t really a need to constantly switch between the two characters every day. Everything was planned very systematically. We also had workshops before the shoot where the team explained every aspect of both characters, and we rehearsed several scenes in advance. Half my work was already done before I reached the set. It was an extremely well-prepared team, which made switching between the characters much easier.”

Taking on the brooding intensity of Ansh allowed the actor to fulfil a long-standing creative aspiration. “Ansh is obviously much darker than Yash, and it’s the kind of role people don’t usually imagine me playing. But honestly, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Every aspiring actor has imagined playing that brooding, intense character in front of the mirror, delivering powerful dialogues, and I finally got that opportunity. I didn’t want the performance to become caricatured or feel like I was copying another actor. I tried to keep it as original as possible. I’m grateful that the team trusted me with a role that’s so different from what I’m usually offered on television. It was something I had been waiting and hoping to do for a long time.”
When comparing the two distinct roles, Mishkat found that strong writing enabled him to connect effortlessly with both characters. “Without sounding pompous, I genuinely feel both the roles came quite naturally to me because the writing was so strong and I was directed really well. Everything was sorted before I came on set—I simply had to perform. But if I had to choose one, it would probably be Yash. Although Ishika didn’t initially think I’d play him so effortlessly, comedy is something that comes naturally to me. People don’t really know that side of me, but I think I have a decent sense of humour, and I believe it comes across well in the show. That said, playing Ansh was equally satisfying because it allowed me to explore a completely different side of myself as an actor.”
Establishing genuine rapport off-camera was key to bringing natural warmth and chemistry to the screen alongside co-star Priyanshi Yadav. “I first met Priyanshi on the set of Anupamaa, where we began rehearsing our scenes together. Since the show involved a lot of physical closeness that’s natural between a boyfriend and girlfriend—things like hugging and holding hands—we wanted to make sure we were comfortable with each other before shooting. Doing those scenes with someone you’ve just met can feel awkward, so we rehearsed together first. Later, we went for a short walk outside the set, spoke about our lives, and got to know each other better, which really helped us break the ice. Priyanshi is very easy to work with. We were both open to each other’s suggestions during scenes. She’s a very intelligent actor, and her inputs were always valuable. When your co-actor is sincere and well prepared, it naturally makes your own job easier, and that’s exactly how it was with her.”

Working under the precise creative leadership of creator Ishika Shahi provided the actors with a rock-solid foundation. “Working with Ishika was honestly a wonderful experience because she is incredibly well prepared. She knows her script inside out, understands every character thoroughly, keeps track of continuity, knows exactly what every character should wear, and is absolutely clear about what she wants. She’s a perfectionist. If she wants something a certain way, she’ll make sure it’s done exactly that way—very much like her father, perhaps even a couple of levels more particular. I was genuinely surprised by how dedicated she is. If my performances felt convincing, a lot of the credit goes to Ishika, along with Rishi sir, Gulshan sir, and Rajan sir, because they created such a strong foundation for us as actors. I truly hope we get to collaborate again.”
