In the digital age, cybercrime has found chilling new avenues, often striking closest to home. In the Story TV series Scam 2024 – The Digital Arrest Story, actor Vineet Raina steps into the shoes of Raj Thakur, a suspended yet resolute police officer who tirelessly pursues a shadowy network of cybercriminals within the bounds of the law. Co-starring alongside Vidya Malavade as Priya Sharma and Pratik Sehajpal as Vicky Mandal, Vineet portrays a man fighting a relentless war against digital fraud.

The chilling reality of digital extortion became a personal ordeal for the actor when his mother received a terrifying call from scammers posing as law enforcement, claiming her son had been taken into custody. Sharing how the terrifying incident unfolded in real life, Vineet recounted, “At the beginning of this year, my mother received a call from an unknown woman who claimed that I was shooting in Mumbai and that my phone was not working. Soon after, she received a WhatsApp video call where a man in uniform claimed that I had been taken into custody over a scam. My mother immediately tried calling me, but I was shooting at a place where network connectivity was poor. Thankfully, because I had already spoken to my parents about digital scams, AI-generated voices and faces, and how scammers operate, she did not panic. When I eventually called her back, I explained that it was a scam. She told me that had I not made her aware of these things, the situation could have been very different.”

Reflecting on how modern technology has empowered fraudsters with deepfakes and cloned voices, Vineet emphasises that no one is truly immune to deception. Highlighting the urgent need for open conversations and vigilance within every household, he added, “Today, with AI becoming more advanced, scammers have very sophisticated ways to deceive people. They can use cloned voices, manipulated videos and fake identities to make their stories seem convincing. Anyone can fall victim to such scams, irrespective of how educated or aware they are. We need to spread awareness among our parents, families and loved ones, and encourage people to verify information before reacting. Staying calm, avoiding suspicious links and confirming such claims directly with the person concerned can make a crucial difference.”
