According to reports, the case has been filed over comments allegedly made by Mandhira Kapur Smith on social media and during her appearance on the podcast In Controversial with Pooja Chaudhuri. The podcast host, Pooja Chaudhuri, has also been named as a defendant in the suit.

In her petition, Priya Kapur has claimed that soon after the death of her husband Sunjay Kapur, Mandhira began making statements that were aimed at damaging her public image. She has alleged that this was not a one-time remark but part of a planned, ongoing effort to malign her name.

According to the plea, Mandhira Kapur Smith shared online posts and videos in which Priya was directly named and accused of serious wrongdoing. Priya has stated that these comments were false and were made to create hatred against her and isolate her socially. She has further claimed that the content portrayed her as dishonest and accused her of moral and professional misconduct.

This is not the only legal action between the two. Reports say that a criminal defamation complaint filed by Priya Kapur against Mandhira Kapur Smith is already pending before the Patiala House Court in Delhi. That complaint is also related to similar alleged statements.

The defamation case comes at a time when the Kapur family is already involved in a larger legal dispute over assets and a family trust. The Delhi High Court has recently asked Rani Kapur, mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, to respond to an application filed by Priya Kapur.

Priya has sought perjury proceedings against Rani Kapur under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. She has claimed that there are strong documents, including affidavits and photographs, which show that Rani Kapur made a false statement under oath. According to Priya, Rani had stated that she had neither signed nor read the RK Family Trust Deed, a claim Priya says is untrue.

At the same time, Rani Kapur has filed her own suit seeking a declaration that the RK Family Trust, created in October 2017 in her name, is null and void. She has alleged that the trust documents were forged and that she was wrongfully deprived of her rights and assets.

Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12 after collapsing during a polo match in England. Reports said he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Since his passing, tensions within the family appear to have escalated, leading to multiple court cases.

The Delhi High Court has encouraged family members to resolve their disputes peacefully. The matter is expected to come up for hearing again in March.
