Beautiful Broken Things is a touching YA novel by Sara Barnard. The book goes over quite a few tough topics while talking about relationships with three friends Caddy, Rosie, and the new girl, Suzanne. Here is a deleted scene from the novel, as per a WH Smith report. Check it out:

In the scene, Sarah leads her to a room. It was tiny with very little furnishing as she asked Suzanne how it is. Suzanne doesn’t get why it would matter but she replies with a sure. Brian, her brother is also quite cheerful as if to make up for her unenthusiastic answer.

Sarah suggests leaving Suzie to “get a feel of the place for a few minutes.” Suzanne takes in the room once more trying to see it as a ‘teenager’s potential bedroom’ rather than an overlooked guest room.

She sinks down into the bed as she tries to calm herself. She thinks, “I can’t get upset about the fact that three days ago I lived in Reading with my family, but now I’ve been ‘rescued’. I can’t get upset about my broken ribs or my battered face or the way I didn’t say goodbye to my mother.”

She tries to calm down like how the doctor had suggested. She reasons, “Here is what I know: my ribs will heal on their own; the pain will ease. The bruises on my face and my chest will fade by the time I start at my new school. I have been rescued. I am safe. I live in Brighton with my aunt, who will take care of me.”

Brian returns and flinches when he sees Suzanne’s state. He tries to calm her down by reasoning that she will be fine. But she doesn’t feel any better.

Her thoughts spiral, “How can this be fine? How? In a couple of weeks, I’m meant to be starting Year 11, and now I don’t even know what school I will be in if I get accepted by a school at all. And even if I do, what will I tell people? I’ve spent my life lying about my home life and my family. If this is a fresh start, does that mean I have to be honest now? Tell potential friends that my stepfather used to beat me up?

They will look at me with horrified sympathy. They’ll say things like, ‘God, that’s awful . . . I’m so sorry . . .’ but they’ll be thinking, ‘But you must have done something,’ because people always do. They’ll never see me. They’ll see a victim.”
Brian reasons that the most important thing is she is safe. He reassures her that he will stay for a while, however long she needs. She settles to talk about redoing the walls. The next day she gets ready to attend her new school.
