Fighting games typically adhere to a tried-and-true formula. On the screen are two warriors whose main purpose is to beat the other person’s stuffing. Depending on the game, there may even be eight warriors, but the premise remains that only one of them can be victorious near the end of the competition. That’s why it’s so refreshing when a fighter does one of the more realistic things in a fight and summons backup. This is a list of quantity vs. quality, highlighting a slew of characters who prefer to battle with numbers on their side. To be clear, this only counts characters who have their partner as an important part of their moveset; calling in a teammate for one or two attacks will not count. After that, let’s see how many characters can field a whole team for combat.

Rosalina & Luma – Super Smash Bros.

Team characters are nothing new in Smash Brothers. With at least one appearing in every game since Melee. But, possibly to the delight of certain Melee fans who have distinct memories of the Ice Climbers, let’s look at Rosalina and Luma, two more team members in Smash Bros.

Zato-1 – Guilty Gear

Whatever one’s opinion of the game is, no one can dispute that it contains some of the more distinct characters in fighting games. A child who uses an anchor to hit people in the head and plays with a dolphin in the middle of a fight? May, I believe. A girl who disguises herself as a man by wearing a mech suit? That’s Kum, of course. A child with glasses who is fighting in his sleep? Bedman.

Videl – Dragon Ball Fighterz

Dragon Ball FighterZ will feature characters who are among the most powerful in the universe. So how can a regular person keep up with a squad of tremendously strong heavy hitters? If you replied anything other than “bring her spouse to beat you down in a tag team assault,” you definitely weren’t paying attention to this list.

10 Ferra & Torr – Mortal Kombat X

While they weren’t the most popular characters among players, the fact that they were two characters filling a roster spot made them stand out among the cast. What distinguishes these two from the other team characters in the series is that they extend one another’s moves rather than waiting to be tagged in.

Pain – Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm

Pain is a major antagonist in Naruto Shippuden. The pain soon established himself as a scary threat to confront, with a sympathetic aim similar to the main character’s but with a far more vicious twist, and he’s almost as terrifying in the action arena game Ninja Storm. Of course, he has his characteristic almighty push that hits even when the opponent is behind him, but his most scary feature is that he brings his entire team to battle alongside him.
