When it comes to finding time to exercise, the fight is genuine. Because getting your booty to the gym after a hard day at work is nearly impossible. It’s not that you don’t want to work out; it’s simply that you’re exhausted and need some downtime.

We’ve heard that. These easy tactics will transform your day into a workout without needing you to work out. While trainers have some wonderful insights for what to do at the gym, they also have some brilliant ideas for incorporating extra calorie-burning, muscle-strengthening minutes of exercise into your non-gym, spandex-free hours. Prepare to flex those muscles.

1. Work while you prepare for your day.

Do you brush your teeth or your hair? Putting on makeup? It’s really simple to transform these regular habits into low-key exercises. Becky Hempel, head trainer at DavidBartonGym, recommends doing these while standing on one leg. If you’re feeling brave (and awake), you could even try some squats. Because two minutes of brushing your teeth plus two minutes of squats equal 11 calories burned*.

2. Power walks to and from everywhere.

Simply increasing your walking speed can have a significant impact. Five minutes at a leisurely pace burns roughly 13 calories, whereas five minutes at a fast speed burns 20 calories. So go faster everywhere you go, even if it’s only to the restroom. As an added bonus, it will make you appear really important.

3. Get off the bus or train at a stop early.

Flywheel master teacher and creative director Danielle Devine-Baum like this trick. If you rely extensively on public transit in the morning, this is a terrific way to get a jump start on your day. Obviously, you’ll want to allow yourself some extra time to travel to and from locations (even if you walk swiftly, it won’t be as fast as a bus or train). Even if it’s only a 10-minute brisk walk, that’s 41 calories more than you’d be burning—and it’s also excellent for your general health.
