Pavements, alleyways, driveways, and other features of so-called landscape architecture are lit using in-ground lighting (trees, bushes, water elements, etc.). They are usually not highly apparent, but their lighting effect can be seen with the naked eye. They are hidden space decorators who, after dark, can create magnificent effects in the space lighted from below. When selecting such luminaires, what should we look for (apart from the effect)?

In-ground fixture casings are subjected to a variety of impacts or pressure from persons or animals who may tread on the luminaire. Cars or other vehicles that can easily drive over the weight are sometimes the loads. Mechanical impact resistance is one of the tests performed on outdoor luminaires in the laboratory. The IK value represents the luminaire’s mechanical resistance, with 0 indicating no protection and 10 indicating the strongest resistance (impact resistance of a 5 kg steel hammer falling on the housing from a height of 40 cm). High mechanical impact resistance is especially significant in the case of luminaires used in driveways, pavements, and other areas where continuous loads or impacts are present.

The lighting fixture’s resistance to external variables such as dust and water is linked to both its safety and its durability. The most crucial is the enclosure’s ingress protection, which is indicated by the IP degree in two numbers. The first digit represents the degree of protection against solids intrusion, while the second digit represents the degree of protection against water ingress. The IP00 indicates that there is no protection, whereas the IP69 indicates that the device is completely protected against dust and water penetration. Luminaires that are only turned on for a few hours a day, commonly in the evening, at night, or in conjunction with movement sensors.

As a result, their energy efficiency is critical, and this will assure the use of LED sources, which will provide illumination endurance and eliminate the need to replace light sources. Not only can in-ground lighting be gorgeous, but it may also be highly practical. It’ll come in handy on cobblestones, as well as on the road around the home, in the garden, and on the plot.
