Robert Downey Jr. is quite the popular actor. He reached the heights of his acting career after he took up the role of Tony Stark in the blockbuster Marvel movies Iron Man. The actor didn’t always have smooth sailing in his life and hit quite a rough patch before he worked on his issues and took the step toward stardom.

The actor was born in New York on 4th April 1965 to the celebrity couple, Robert Downey Sr., a famous filmmaker, and Elsie Ford, an actress. While he comes from a movie family he still found fame with his own merits.

He started acting in movies at the young age of 5 in his father’s movie, Pound. The actor made quite a name for himself with his acting career. He received quite a few accolades for his roles as well. However, as per a Dream Life Recovery report, by the 80’s he seemed to be working hard on his acting career while drugs and alcohol slowly took over his life. By the end of the ’90s, the actor found himself struggling with his drug addiction. He had been in and out of rehab quite a few times by that point.

He hit rock bottom in 1999 when he was sentenced to 36 months in state prison, according to the same report. He spent the next 12 months there before he was paroled. He was arrested twice in the next 8 months. He lost quite a bit, he was in debt, on the verge of bankruptcy and his wife left him and took his son.

It was after this that he was set on recovery! He jumped back into his career soon after! In 2002, he came back to the big screen after rehab with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Zodiac both super hits! He also got romantically involved with Susan Levin when he worked on the 2003 movie, Gothika. They got married in 2005 and had two kids.

Three years after his wedding his most successful movie was released in 2008, Iron Man. His work in the Marvel movies definitely cemented his name in Hollywood.
