He made his debut with the 1981 movie Rocky. It was an immediate box-office super-hit! He then got a role in the movie, Vidhaata, alongside some big names like Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, and Sanjeev Kumar. The movie turned out to be the highest-grossing Hindi movie of 1982! For the longest time, he got the sweet supportive friends role. Dil Chahta Hai was the movie that broke the chain for him. He broke out of his usual roles and started venturing into roles with a more complex character and more challenges. He made some amazing movies that will never be forgotten like Agent Vinod, Omkara, Kal Ho Na Ho.
