As if the ’90s and ’00s weren’t already having a fashion moment, Zendaya is now channeling a classic Looney Tunes character on the red carpet. The actress attended the premiere of Space Jam: A New Legacy, the LeBron James revival of the Michael Jordan-starring 1996 blockbuster, on Monday night. Zendaya dressed up as Lola Bunny, the cartoon bunny she voices in the new movie, in a color-blocked two-piece jacket-and-shorts combo by Moschino and white pump shoes, teamed with a high ponytail evocative of the animation figure. Law Roach, the actress’ stylist, verified her inspiration on Instagram, posting a video of her on the red carpet with the caption: “Tell me you’re Lola Bunny without telling me you’re Lola Bunny.”
Zendaya’s style is reminiscent of the new Lola Bunny, Bugs Bunny’s love interest. Before the forthcoming Space Jam sequel, Warner Bros. unveiled a desexualized revamp of the character last year. “Listen, I get why people don’t want things to change,” director Malcolm D. Lee told IndieWire. “But I think we needed some growth with her, not by objectifying her, but by making her powerful and yet feminine.”
Lola Bunny now wears hoodies instead of a crop top and a basketball jersey with a rainbow-colored emblem in the film. Roach chose a colorful piece from Moschino’s Resort 2022 collection for Zendaya, which comes as no surprise.
This isn’t the first time the stylist-turned-actress duo has opted for bright hues on the red carpet. Zendaya mimicked Beyoncé at the BET Awards last month, wearing an antique Versace purple-and-green gown worn by the “Single Ladies” diva at the same event in 2003. Back in April, the Euphoria star won best-dressed at the 2021 Academy Awards in a vibrant yellow Valentino gown with a stomach cutout.
