Stars have gracefully taken to displaying glimpses of skin through cleverly placed cut-outs—a bit modest, but just as —rather than baring it all for the world to see.

While cut-outs are more popular than ever, both on and off the red carpet, they’re not a new concept. The openwork detailing can be dated back to the 1930s when it was seen on celebrities such as Bette Davis. It’s no surprise that she was one of the first to wear cut-outs, considering she is considered one of the best actresses in cinema history. She was photographed striking a strong position in a white skin-skimming minimalist gown with a dramatic keyhole for her Ex-Lady publicity shoot. It was sultry without being overly so.

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet attended the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2010 wearing a spectacular cutout gown. The star dazzled in black.

Megan Fox

Megan Fox had her own Mugler moment, and it was a million times more sultry than we could have imagined. The actress donned one of the famously sensual cutout dresses by the French fashion designer to the Billboard Music Awards, and we’re quite sure it raised the temperature in Los Angeles by 20 degrees. It was even steamy than the PDA she exchanged on the red carpet with lover Machine Gun Kelly — and that’s saying a lot.

Taylor Swift

The “Style” singer was the guest editor of Glamour UK in June 2015 and wore a white Valentino cutout dress on the cover.

Cardi B

The “I Like It” rapper wore a pearl-encrusted peek-a-boo dress with limitless cutouts and fully laced-up side panels on the red carpet. The vivid artwork matched an ornate headdress and revealed the artist’s unique leg tattoo.
