The audience was underwhelmed by the diversity of the winners at the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which were held over the weekend. According to reports, white performers won all 12 lead and supporting categories at the Emmys 2021 in the categories of comedy, drama, and limited races.
As a result of the lack of diversity in the Emmys, the hashtag #EmmysSoWhite became popular on social media. According to People, at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, white actors won all 12 lead and supporting acting categories. Despite the fact that there was a diverse field of nominees in practically every category, no major prizes were given to actors of color at the ceremony.
Gillian Anderson, Tobias Menzies, Josh O’Connor, and Olivia Colman won the four acting awards for Netflix’s British drama series The Crown, beating over nominees such as Pose star Mj Rodriguez in the lead actress competition and the late Michael K. Williams in the supporting actor contest.
Most of the prizes were handed to actors of color in other categories, such as comedy, limited series, and others. Jason Sudeikis of Ted Lasso and Jean Smart of Hacks took home the lead acting award in the comedy category. The supporting races were won by Sudeikis’ co-stars Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein.
