Finally, the wait is over! The much-awaited, female-led action film Alpha in YRF’s Spy Universe has been released in theatres, and we will let you know if it’s worth watching.

The Storyline

The film tells the story of Colonel Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), who loses his wife and child in an unexpected situation. Simultaneously, focuses on Sita (Alia Bhatt/Alpha), a deadly soldier who is trained by her adoptive father, Fateh Singh Lakhawat (Bobby Deol). She obeys her father’s secret mission, but beneath, she wishes to kill him after discovering the truth of her past. Joining her on the mission is her sister, Durga (Sharvari). All this creates confusion, but whether the film deserves to clear this confusion or not, you should decide by reading further.

The Biggest Strength

Well, the biggest strength was the big budget from a big banner like Yash Raj Films, but the spy action couldn’t do justice. In addition, there were action scenes that looked impressive, visually appealing cinematography, and a few well-presented sequences.

What Didn’t Work

The major thing that didn’t work in the film’s favor was the screenplay by Uday Chopra. While the actions caught attention, no connection, emotions, or meaning to the storyline made it hollow. As I have always said, after Dhurandhar 1 & 2, the expectations are much higher, and surviving in such an atmosphere for a film is not really possible.

Undoubtedly, Alpha stands as the weakest film in YRF’s Spy Universe, and this is a point the makers should understand about their mistakes.

Director Shiv Rawail couldn’t capture the real emotions, authentic character, and genuineness that a spy action needs. The film’s music also couldn’t elevate the energy.

Performances

Alia Bhatt, as the deadly soldier, comes across as flat. While the actress is one of the finest stars, to be honest, she doesn’t fit into the action genre. Her character couldn’t connect, even as she tried to give her best in the action sequences.

Sharvari is on a roll. The actress otherwise did well, balancing the emotions and actions with confidence and charm.

Bobby Deol as Fateh wasn’t impressive because of the poor handling of the character arc. Anil Kapoor did his best while Dia Mirza looked good. Hrithik Roshan in the cameo had nothing to do.

Overall, despite its grand scale and impressive production values, Alpha couldn’t deliver on its promises. The film thrives on YRF’s old-school, glossy, glamorous, and intense action that looks spectacular yet offers little lasting payoff, with a missing sense of patriotism and emotion.

IWMBuzz rates Alpha 2.5 out of 5 stars.
