In an era when dark themes, action, horror, thriller, and crime drama are dominating, David Dhawan returns with a fresh breath of air, bringing back entertainment with his iconic blend of love, comedy, and drama in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. To sum it up, this film is a perfect dose of entertainment that will keep you invested throughout.
Plotline
The film follows the life of Jass Ahuja, played by Varun Dhawan. He is happily married to his wife Baani, played by Mrunal Thakur. However, the happy marriage soon turns ugly when Jass wants to start a family, while Baani, a successful company CEO, puts the idea on hold. And the different opinions and wishes take their marriage to a point where they seek divorce.
But the court gives them a six-month cooling period during which Jass goes to London, where he meets Preet, played by Pooja Hegde, and soon the two fall in love. What’s next? Preet gets pregnant before Jass’s divorce, but chaos ensues when Baani also comes to London with the good news that she, too, is expecting. With two babies from two different women at the same time, Jass finds himself trapped as he struggles to hide the truth from Baani and Preet, turning it into a rollercoaster of unexpected love, drama, secrets, misunderstandings, and comedy.
Direction, Storyline, & Portrayal
Director David Dhawan rightfully entertains viewers with his classic blend of romance, comedy, and drama. While he delivers what was expected of him, the film misses the mark in leaving a lasting impact, given the audience’s changed preferences. Despite the varied thoughts, the viewers enjoy the old-school loud comedy. It beautifully takes us back in time when this type of film ruled.
When watching this kind of film, keep logic aside and immerse yourself in the confusion and drama that will keep you invested throughout. From colorful locations, bright settings, vibrant takes, and a playful vibe, it keeps the energy high.
The screenplay is good, with no hard attempts to impress but simply wins hearts. The music adds more energy and entertainment to the film. I personally liked all the tracks, especially the visual presentation. Some moments entertain, and all of them truly belong to Varun Dhawan.
Performances
Varun Dhawan is the heart of the film. With familiar tropes, the actor, with his presence, keeps the film watchable. And yet again, he proves why he is the king of his generation and of the romance-comedy genre. As Jass, he doesn’t try to step out of his comfort zone, yet again impressing with his chocolate-boy vibe.
Mrunal Thakur is sweet, confident, and entertaining. Her character brings the chaos, and her chemistry with Varun is a delight. In contrast, Pooja Hegde lights up the scene with her bold personality. The best part is whether it’s Mrunal or Pooja, Varun’s chemistry with both of them shines.
Maniesh Paul contributes to the chaos and drama, while Mouni Roy further intensifies the situation. Actor Chunky Pandey and Rakesh Bedi were pretty good, while Manoj Pahwa, Johny Lever and Rajpal Yadav needed more presence.
Overall, produced by Ramesh Taurani under Tips Films Pvt. Ltd, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is a perfect dose of entertainment that blends love, romance, friendship, marriage chaos, misunderstandings, emotions, drama, and babies in an engaging watch.
IWMBuzz rates Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai 3 out of 5 stars!
