This year on Valentine’s Day, it was the violent O’ Romeo that had hit the screens. Yes, the title was all romantic and the film was also projected as one with Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimti coming together. However this came from the house of Vishal Bhardwaj and hence even though the film arrived around Valentine’s Day weekend, there was more action, drama and blood on screen than one could have imagined in the season of love.
However love is back with vengeance, and that too the way it’s conventionally expected as well, this summer. Starting this Friday, there are going to be multiple back to back films where love will take center stage. Pati Patni Aur Woh Do (15th May), Chand Mera Dil (22nd May), Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai (5th June), Main Wapas Aaunga (12th June) and Cocktail 2 (18th June) will practically arrive back to back and that will make this a love filled season.

We are looking at as many as 5 romantic films in a space of just 6 Fridays, something that is truly unprecedented.
What makes this further noticeable is the fact that of late there was a belief that it’s the big budget large screen entertainment action drama that was ruling the roost. The success of two Dhurandhar films and Border 2 had rightly established that and then Bhooth Bangla, even though not quite in the same definition, still ticked a lot of boxes when it came to big screen entertainment.
On the other hand the aforementioned films belong to a different time, zone and space. Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is more of a comedy of errors with Ayushmann Khurrana finding himself amidst Sara Ali Khan, Wamiqa Gabbi and Rakulpreet Singh with a jungle backdrop to add on to the spice. Chand Mera Dil is actually one true blue romance featuring Lakshya and Ananya Panday as the new jodi in town with music being the mainstay. Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is reminding one of the Govinda – David Dhawan film from the 90s and instead of making one’s heart beat with emotions, it could well tickle the funny bone once Varun Dhawan gets into his characteristic antics with Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde. Main Wapas Aaunga is a classic romance in the offering with Imtiaz Ali promising to bring his signature touch to this Diljit Dosanjh, Shavari Wagh and Vedang Raina film. Last but not the least there is Cocktail 2 which this time promises to be a true cocktail of affairs as the dynamics between Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandana are said to belong to never seen before kind.
Yes, there is variety in store when one talks about the core setup. However it’s the element of romance which is common amongst each of these films. Incidentally, action and drama have taken backstage during this summer and that’s quite an unheard of phenomenon because typically May and June do bring with them some quintessential big screen entertainment as well. However for that audiences would need to wait for the end of month since Akshay Kumar would be bringing his next biggie Welcome To The Jungle on 26th June and that’s one action comedy multistarrer. As a matter of fact that will lead into another one belonging to the same genre, Dhamaal 4 (3rd July) but that’s the story for a different day.
Till then, expect a few beating hearts to bring on some pyaar, ishq aur mohabbat – Some with just romance in the midst of affairs and others with a dash of light heart moments, drama and comedy as well. What needs to be seen though is appetite amongst audiences to digest so much of love in back to back weeks for a month at a half at stretch.
Well, let there be love!
