What makes Bollywood truly special? Well, films after films that arrive every Friday. The magic of box office. The euphoria. The jubilations. Stars being born. Audiences being entertained. New films being announced. Entertainment quotient being at a high. Promise of more and more special things being on the way.
In the midst of this all, the last thing that one looks for is internal feuds, family gossip, financial crunch and other controversies surrounding stars. There is something about glamour that pulls a fan towards their idols and stars. They are happier to live off their Instagram feed and the dream to touch the skies and enjoy superstardom in a way that’s so inherent to the glamour world.
That’s the reason why the last few days have been turbulent to say the least for Bollywood. Rajpal Yadav has just gone to jail as he needs to pay back 5 crores (or is that 9 crores?). Sunita Ahuja has been taunting and accusing Govinda for a year now bringing all marital disputes into the open. And then the most recent one of them all is this huge controversy involving Farhan Akhtar and Ranveer Singh over Don 3, something that most didn’t see coming.
No one would have expected Rajpal Yadav, a superlative force in comedy, to be battling this personal tragedy where he has to be lodged in jail due to funds not being available. Of course there are various theories floating around. On one end there are members of the film fraternity offering to pay off his debt or give him advance signing amount for their next film together. On the other hand, reports floating around financials of the actor suggest that he has assets worth crores already available with him.
What’s the truth? Well, that’s something that he knows, and for the judiciary to find.
Marital discord between Govinda and Sunita Ahuja has been in public space for years now. Numerous podcasts done by the lady of the house have disclosed a lot more about the personal life of the actor, some said in jest and some with complete seriousness. Career graph, affairs, money handling, discipline, involvement with family – accusations have floated around various spectrums and some or the other tangent continues to get discovered. It’s only very recently that Govinda has briefly spoken about these issues but still most of it in a controlled tone and very carefully chosen words.
Clearly, the yesteryear superstar isn’t firing away all cylinders, though one wonders it would be till then as his patience may run out sooner or later.
The biggest controversy of the season though is heartburn that Farhan Akhtar and his Excel Entertainment are facing due to Ranveer Singh walking out of Don 3. The film was announced many years back but it never went on floors. Then Dhurandhar happened and the film seemed possible. However now Ranveer chose to walk away as he wishes to start Pralay instead. This is when Excel asked for 40 crores in damage. Ranveer is in no mood to pay and he has his own reasons to not do the film.
Well, for now the case has reached the bigwigs of the industry and they are trying to set up a compromise between the heavyweights. While one waits for that to happen, apparently there are threats that Ranveer is getting, and that’s more about his current stardom scene with Dhurandhar 2 arriving in a month’s time. Meanwhile, Farhan has to decide between bringing Don 3, Jee Le Zara or some other film on floors soon.
With so much happening, there is a lot more off-screen than on-screen excitement currently for Bollywood. The Aam junta would rather choose action on screen though, with a month still remaining for biggies Dhurandhar 2 and Toxic to arrive on screen. Hopefully, the feuds will settle down, controversies will die out and out of court settlements will take place soon, and industry would celebrate its status as one happy family all over again.
