Homophobia Hits Bollywood...Major Studios Wary Of Gay Themes

While in America and the rest of the West films about homosexuality are being made with remarkable rampancy,in Bollywood the theme of same-sex relationships have become “largely unacceptable” to producers across the board.

Thanks to the poor boxoffice performance of the Ayushmann Khurrana-Jitendra Kumar gay love story Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan a new wave of homophobia has hit Bollywood.

A major young actress is known for her pathbreaking performances have written her first script where the protagonist is gay.

It’s been turned down by every major studio.

“They say they love the script. But after Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan not doing that well, they want to avoid homosexual themes,” says the actress.

This seems true even on the OTT platform where middleclass morality and censorship(in that order) are disregarded. No significant Indian content on a gay theme is coming up on any of the major OTT players, namely Amazon Netflix or creator network like Applause.

We also have reason to believe that Karan Johar’s forthcoming gay romcom Dostana 2 starring Janhvi Kapoor and Kartik Aryan has gone back to the storyboard for serious tweaking.
