In a thrilling development for Indian cinema, the nation’s official entry for the 2027 Oscars has been locked. The FFI (Film Federation of India) held a press conference on Friday, September 11, 2026, to announce India’s official entry for the Academy Awards. Marathi film Gondhal has been officially chosen for the Best International Feature Film category.
India has been sending films to the Oscars since 1957, beginning with Mother India, which secured a nomination but did not win. Later, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! was nominated in 1988, while the Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan earned a nomination in 2001. India is yet to win the Oscar in what is now known as the Best International Feature Film category. More recently, Pan Nalin’s Chhello Show made the Oscar shortlist, as did Homebound, but neither went on to win the coveted award.
Gondhal is a 2025 Marathi-language thriller written and directed by Santosh Davakhar. The psychological thriller features an ensemble cast starring Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohini, Kishor Kadam, Suresh Vishwakarma, Nishad Bhoir, Anuj Prabhu, and Vitthal Kale in central roles.
