In a recent interview on Siddharth Kannan’s podcast, veteran actor Raju Kher opened up about the steepest emotional, financial, and physical trials of his life, including his relationship with his brother, Anupam Kher.

Financial Setbacks

Reflecting on a particularly dark phase in his career, Raju shared that he sold his house to produce a show for a channel that went missing after a few months. He emphasized that he suffered a loss as he invested in the show and even booked a 4 BHK house but faced the setback.

Anupam Kher’s Hidden Pain

Raju admitted that he initially expected his sibling, the highly successful Anupam Kher, to help him during his financial low phase automatically. But he shared that his mindset shifted when he came across a newspaper ticker saying Anupam Kher deeply wished to have his own child.

He shared that acknowledging his brother’s hidden pain made him realize that expecting support from others is unfair without acknowledging their own unique struggles. From that specific day on, Raju stopped keeping expectations.

The actor shared that he saw his brother, Anupam Kher, as support, but he stopped working because he was looking for substantial roles, and his brother didn’t help him.

Sharing Anupam’s hidden pain, the actor said he saw a newspaper at the time with a ticker saying Anupam Kher ‘wishes’ to have his own child. That day he realized that expecting others to help him is only okay when he also acknowledges the other person’s issues. Raju shared that he then stopped expecting anything from anyone.

Anupam Kher Becoming His Savior

Speaking about his brother Anupam, Raju emphasized that Anupam has always been a pillar of unconditional strength. In 2004, he discovered malignant urinary bladder cancer at the same time he was facing a financial setback.

Raju revealed that Anupam Kher was shooting overseas for a project at that time. As soon as he learned of the cancer diagnosis, he immediately flew back to Mumbai. Dismissing Raju’s initial hesitations, Anupam had him admitted to Lilavati Hospital and covered all the medical expenses himself.

Expressing his love and admiration for Anupam, Raju called him a true father figure. Raju said he lives without fear today because he knows his elder brother has his back.

Anupam Kher’s First Marriage

Spilling the beans on Anupam Kher’s marriage to Madhumalti Kapoor, Raju shared that the two got married after dating for two to three years in the temple. But the next day after the marriage, Anupam felt he could not live with her, and they parted ways. He also shared that he never questioned Anupam’s decision but stayed on his side.

Krrish 3 Heartbreak

Speaking about his role in Krrish 3, Raju shared that he did good work in the film, but his role was cut a lot, which didn’t sit well with him as an actor. He shared that Rakesh Roshan didn’t tell him beforehand, and he learned about it when the film was released, which shocked him. Raju, however, said Rakesh might have had his own reasons.
