Ryan Coogler’s 2025 supernatural thriller Sinners has become the most significant film of the 2026 awards season after earning 16 Oscar nominations, setting a new record. The film’s awards success demonstrates its artistic achievements and its broad impact on the most important industry award shows.
Sinners achieved historical significance at the 32nd Actor Awards, previously known as the SAG Awards, when it won Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, making Coogler the first director to win at the event with two different movies after his previous success with Black Panther. Michael B. Jordan received the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role award for his dual performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack. This achievement established him as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors.
The film won multiple awards at the SAG Awards. Sinners emerged as the top winner at the NAACP Image Awards by taking home 13 awards which included Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Ensemble Cast. Delroy Lindo’s deeply nuanced supporting role also earned him a win. Sinners won three BAFTA Film Awards while Coogler made history as the first Black winner of Best Original Screenplay. Wunmi Mosaku won Best Supporting Actress while Ludwig Göransson received Best Original Score for his haunting musical score.
The soundtrack achieved Grammy success when it won Best Compilation Soundtrack and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe Awards solidified the film’s reputation by awarding it multiple victories in casting, ensemble, and score categories.
With the 98th Academy Awards set for March 15, Sinners heads into Oscar night as the clear frontrunner, poised to turn its critical acclaim into historic victories.
