In a conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, the actress shared interesting behind-the-scenes anecdotes about Salman and Aishwarya’s blossoming romance, their late arrivals on set and an incident in which Bhansali reportedly reprimanded Salman for touching Aishwarya during the shooting of the song Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan.
Smita, who played Aishwarya’s mother in the film, recalled how the actors’ off-screen relationship became evident during the shoot. According to her, their feelings for each other added a natural charm to their on-screen chemistry.
Recalling the days when their romance was blossoming, Smita said that the two actors would sometimes arrive together several hours after their scheduled call time. While the crew would be left waiting, she felt that their affection for each other was visible.
She suggested that their real-life romance contributed to the film’s magic, as their emotions translated beautifully onto the screen. Despite the delays, she recalled that the director did not reprimand them for arriving late, given the circumstances.
One of the most interesting anecdotes from the conversation concerned the shooting of Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan. Smita recalled a scene in which Aishwarya was standing while Salman was supposed to walk around a table and stop in front of her.
However, Salman spontaneously touched Aishwarya’s arm, even though the gesture was not part of the planned sequence. This prompted Sanjay Leela Bhansali to question him about the unexpected action.
According to Smita, Bhansali asked Salman why he had touched Aishwarya when the scene did not require it. She explained that Salman’s gesture appeared to come naturally because he was in love with his co-star.
The incident offered a glimpse into the emotions surrounding the film’s production, with Smita recalling how the actors’ affection was apparent to those working alongside them.
Beyond the romance, Smita also spoke about Aishwarya’s gentle nature and her interactions with people on set. She recalled the actress being warm towards those around her and mentioned their conversations about spirituality.
Smita further reflected on the difficult phase Aishwarya experienced after her relationship with Salman ended. Speaking about healing, she shared her perspective on spirituality and the importance of seeking guidance when someone feels the need for it.
Her recollections offer another glimpse into the making of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, a film remembered for its emotional storytelling, memorable music and the chemistry between its lead actors. Through these anecdotes, Smita revisited a period when the lines between reel-life romance and real-life emotions appeared particularly blurred.
