A shocking piece of news surfaced this morning: the well-known veteran Tamil filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja passed away. The actor took his last breath today, Wednesday, June 10; he was 84 years old at the time. The veteran star was at his residence in Chennai during the incident. The actor succumbed to age-related complications, leading to his demise.
The Tamil Film Producers Council confirmed the passing of Bharathiraja in a statement that read, “We regret to inform you that the legendary director Mr. Bharathiraja, a former president and one of the senior members of our association, died early this morning.”
Bharathiraja has been in the entertainment industry for decades, and his work has made him one of the most influential filmmakers in Tamil cinema history. He has directed films such as Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Tik Tik Tik, Mudhal Mariyathai, Nizhalgal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Sigappu Rojakkal, and many others. Over decades of work, he has collaborated with stars such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sivaji Ganesan.
In contrast, in recent years he turned to acting, appearing in projects like Maharaja, Aayutha Ezhuthu, Pandianadu, and others. And he last appeared in Mohanlal and Shobana’s Thudarum.
Bharathiraja was survived by his wife, Chandraleela, and his daughter, Janani. His son Manoj Bharathiraja passed away last year in 2025.
