Ponniyin Selvan which is now recreated by Mani Ratnam as PS – 1 is doing extremely well at the box office. The story, the genre, the cast and the manner in which every bit of realism has been recreated in the film is much talked about now. With the film doing well, there has been a constant back and forth of the film being compared to the original work that appeared as a serial in Kalki in the 1950s. The original work in the books had amazing illustrations to how the characters looked like and how the scenes were set across. Today, as we see the film made by Mani Ratnam, there have been many comparisons drawn to the illustrations about the looks that characters have carried in the film. We came across this beautiful comparison in the report in hindustantimes.com and took reference from that story for our write up here.

Check the hairstyle of Aishwarya Rai’s Nandini here. It is very much similar to how Nandini looked in the illustrations.

Sobhita Dhulipala’s Vaanathi not only looks similar and wears the same jewellery but also drapes her saree in the same fashion as her character did in the original illustrations.

The hilt of the sword wielded by Vikram’s character Aditya Karikalan has been recreated in the film.

The iconic pose of Vallavaraiyan was recreated for Karthi’s character poster for the film.

Nambi’s tilak, paunch, and man bun in the film are all book accurate.

Jayam Ravi’s Arulmozhi Varman is the only character that looks quite different from the drawings but even then he retains his tilak and jewellery of a similar style.

Have you seen the film? Do you remember seeing these illustrations from the original work?
