Music has always been an integral part of Bollywood movies. And often we tend to forget the people working behind the scenes who deliver such chartbuster hits. One such musician who has a long list of churning out hits after hits is none other than Bollywood’s most loved music composer, Pritam.
Pritam Chakraborty is a music composer, director as well as a singer. Hailing from Kolkata, Pritam was always drawn to music from an early age thanks to his father. He first learned to play the guitar when he was still in school. And so after completing his graduation, he enrolled himself at the the FTII in Pune to study Sound Recording and Engineering. It was during this period that he received his first offer to compose music for a Hungarian film called ‘Istvan Gaal.’
During his early days, Pritam was also a part of two bands called “Jotugriher Pakhi” which he formed with his college batchmates and later joined a Bangla band called ‘Chandrabindoo.’
It was in 1997 when Pritam landed in Mumbai to try his luck at Bollywood. He met several other struggling artists like him and got a chance to compose advertisement jingles for numerous popular brands. He even got a chance to compose TV serial title tracks.
Befriending struggling artists proved to be crucial for Pritam as he got his first break when Sanjay Gadhvi, a struggling director at the time, was hired to direct a film and he in turn hired Pritam and one of his other friends to compose music for the film.
Although the film did not work, Gadhvi was signed for one more film and this time Pritam’s song ‘Sharara’ featured in the movie became immensely popular.
Pritam’s partnership with Gadhvi was a solid one as he went on to compose and deliver hits for the director’s next movie, ‘Dhoom’. He went to achieve a lot of recognition and accolades for his compositions in the movie. And that proved to be his turning point.
It was only looking up for the music composer from here on.
With a career spanning decades, Pritam has delivered many hit songs and soundtracks for movies that have gained him immense success. It wouldn’t be wrong to say he is one of the best and most sought-after musicians in Bollywood.
