Vishal Bhardwaj who is an acclaimed film director is known for movies with dark comedies like Maqbool, Haider, Makdee, 7 Khoon Maaf, Omkara and so on. He has taken Bollywood by storm time and again, with his edgy and thought-provoking movies. He is one of the most mature producers, who has given Indian cinema a new dimension. However, the lesser known fact about this talented director is that he is also a music composer par excellence.
Bhardwaj made his music composing debut with the children’s film Abhay in 1995. He received worldwide recognition for composing for Gulzar’s ‘Maachish’. He also received the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for the song ‘Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale’ and that is one classic which is alive till date in everyone’s heart and mind. Who knew that this supremely talented director would also be the man behind one of our most favourite hits in Bollywood.
He went onto composing amazing music for movies like Satya, and the song ‘Sapne Mein Milti Hai’ became a huge hit once again. We have seen it play in a number of marriages ever since and that is the kind of fame and love this song received from the audience.
In an interview, the director cum composer confesses that he is often undervalued as a music composer and he wants to compose for films that aren’t his. He recently won in the Best Music Director category in Kerela State Film Awards for the Malayalam film Carbon. Songs like ‘Baaghi re’ and ‘Rua Rua’ are also composed by him. Vishal Bhardwaj is truly a music director we need to hear more of.
