American singer Chris Brown has avoided immediate jail time after being handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, following a violent altercation at a London venue.
In a shocking turn of events, the Grammy-winning R&B artist received the sentence at London’s Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to a charge of affray stemming from an unprovoked February 2023 attack at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair.
During the hearing, Judge Tony Baumgartner addressed the singer directly before announcing the decision, stating: “I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone.”
The conviction follows an incident where Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw, striking him twice on the head with a heavy glass tequila bottle. Brown had initially faced up to three years in prison after entering his guilty plea in July.
The singer’s co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty. The U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service identified Akinlolu, a Florida rapper also known as HoodyBaby, as Brown’s vocal coach. He received a four-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.
In July, Southwark Crown Court heard the victim, Abraham Diaw, who accused Chris Brown of hitting him twice with a tequila bottle to the head while Akinlolu punched him at the Tape London nightclub in February 2023.
CPS, in his statement, revealed the singer and his accomplice continued to assault Diaw while he was defenseless on the dance floor and attempted to flee the scene immediately after.
After the victim reached the hospital with an injury to his head, an arrest warrant was issued, but by that time Brown and Akinlolu had left the U.K. Later in May 2025, police arrested the singer when he returned to the U.K. as part of his world tour to perform in Manchester.
Following the sentencing, Claire Campbell, a senior Crown prosecutor at CPS London South, remarked: “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice.”
The two men denied charges of assault and grievous bodily harm, as well as Brown having an offensive weapon, and these were subsequently dropped.
