Olivia Newton-John, the Grammy Award-winning singer who ruled the pop, country, adult contemporary, and dance charts with singles like “Physical” and “You’re the One That I Want” and captured millions of hearts as Sandy in the beloved Grease movie, has passed away at the age of 73. Newton-John, a lifelong Australian resident whose albums sold more than 100 million copies, passed away on Monday at her ranch in southern California, John Easterling, according to posts her husband made on Facebook and Instagram.
“Olivia has been a symbol of achievements and hope for over 30 years, sharing her struggle with breast cancer,” her husband said. We kindly request that everyone respect the family’s privacy during this extremely difficult period. Olivia Newton-John was one of the most well-known entertainers in the world from 1973 to 1983. She starred with John Travolta in Grease and Gene Kelly in Xanadu and had 14 top 10 singles in the United States. She also won four Grammy Awards.
One of the era’s most popular songs, “You’re the One That I Want,” a quick-paced Travolta-Newton-John duet, has sold more than 15 million copies. During those years, she transformed herself both musically and visually. In the beginning, the blonde, perpetually beaming Olivia Newton-John preferred gentle pop-country songs like “Please Mr Please” and “Have You Never Been Mellow” and soft-breathing ballads like “I Honestly Love You,” which in 1975 earned Grammy Awards for best female pop voice and record of the year.
