Jimmy Cliff, the Reggae Music luminary, has passed away at 81. He was suffering from pneumonia. He made Reggae music global and popularised it outside the Caribbean culture. He was known for his joyful take on reggae music. Some of his popular tracks include ‘Wonderful World, Beautiful People,’ ‘You can get it if you really want’, ‘Love Solution’ and others.
His wife, Latifa Chambers, took to social media and confirmed his death news, stating, “It is with profound sadness that I share my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” per Deadline.
He also gained fame for his work in the Jamaican flick The Harder They Come. According to Deadline reports, the film’s soundtrack introduced Jamaican music its global recognition.
Cliff also starred in the 1986 comedy Club Paradise, directed by Harold Ramis, and had some more acting gigs, but he is best known for his sixty years of music career, which consists of many album releases and a movement from his early style to rock ‘n’ roll and other genres, among which are the blues and jazz. Refugees was the title of his 2022 release, which was the last album he made.
He was awarded the Jamaican Order Of Merit. He was one of the few musicians to receive the award alongside Bob Marley. His wife noted, further, “I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who have shared his journey with him. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career.
“Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.”
