On this date, 39 years ago, Team India under Kapil Dev won their first World Cup championship. Few people predicted India would win the championship before the event began, but Kapil Dev and his team shocked everyone by making it all the way through.

The fact that India defeated the favourites West Indies in the top match at the Lord’s Cricket Ground added to the satisfaction of winning. In the final, India’s bowling squad put up a valiant performance to defend a below-par total. No one will ever forget the picture of Kapil Dev and his team holding the World Cup trophy while standing on the Lord’s Balcony.

When India batted first, they were only able to score 183, with Kris Srikanth leading the way with a 38-point performance. Sandeep Patil contributed 27 runs as well, but no other batsman was able to bat for an extended period. Sunil Gavaskar (2) and Kapil Dev (15) were unable to start their batting innings. When defending 184, Vivian Richards was dismissed before reaching his half-century, giving Kapil Dev and his team a huge boost. Richards was defeated by Kapil Dev thanks to a brilliant running catch, and after scoring 33, he returned to the pavilion. Even though Jeff Dujon scored 25, West Indies’ innings eventually ended with a score of 140, giving India a comfortable 43-run victory. Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal each claimed three wickets for India. Cricket in the nation received a significant boost after this victory, and the sport has never looked back.

Sachin Tendulkar shared memory in his Instagram post sharing this picture of Kapil Dev holding the trophy. In another one, he shared a scene from the movie ‘83’ with the caption, “Some moments in life inspire you & make your dream. On this day in 1983, we won the World Cup for the first time. I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do too!”
