With the 2020-21 season coming to its conclusion, the Premier League and Serie A already have its winners in Manchester City and Inter respectively. But the Spanish League, usually dominated by Real Madrid and Barcelona have yet to decide their faith. Here’s our take on the teams which are still in the race for the La Liga Santander.
1- Atletico Madrid
Diego Simeone’s team is sitting on top of La Liga currently with 77 points and 35 games played. The acquisition of Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez from Barcelona proved to be a masterstroke as he has shown excellent form since his arrival in Madrid by scoring 19 goals in 29 matches played. Players like Marcos Llorente, Angel Correa and Joao Felix have also matched their expectations. Another major reason for Atletico Madrid to be table toppers is their excellent defensive record. They have just conceded 22 goals this season with Jan Oblak making a total of 93 saves this season.
2- F.C. Barcelona
Unsurprisingly, Barcelona is yet in the title race for the La Liga title and their main man has again stood up with his exceptional performances for the club. Leo Messi is the highest goal scorer in La Liga this season as of now with 29 goals in 34 matches which is a phenomenal record. Messi has been once again single handedly carrying the entire team on its shoulders as Barcelona stand 2nd with 76 points and 36 games played. They will have to win their remaining two fixtures and hope Atletico Madrid does not manage to get 5 points in their remaining 3 fixtures.
3- Real Madrid
Karim Benzema’s excellent form up front has been the highlight of the season for Zinedine Zidane’s men this season. Not only in the La Liga, his excellent form made sure that Real Madrid reach the semi-finals of the UCL. He has 21 goals in 31 games. Real Madrid are 3rd in the La Liga table with 75 points in 35 games. Real Madrid must also aim to win all their remaining fixtures against Granada, Athletic Club and Villareal to reach 84 points and just like F.C. Barcelona, hope that Atletico Madrid drop points.
