Born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka, Punjab, Gill is today the captain of India’s Test and ODI teams and leads the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Gill’s rise began long before he became a senior international player. He first attracted major attention during the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. As India’s vice-captain, Gill was the tournament’s leading run-scorer, finishing with 372 runs, and was named Player of the Tournament. His century against Pakistan in the semi-final further underlined his reputation as one of India’s brightest young batting talents. India went on to win the Under-19 World Cup.

Shubman Gill’s IPL Journey

Gill made his IPL debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018 and gradually established himself as a dependable top-order batter. His breakthrough IPL campaign came with Gujarat Titans, with whom he played a key role in the franchise’s maiden IPL title win in 2022.

The following season was even more impressive. Gill scored 890 runs in IPL 2023, including three centuries, and won the Orange Cap as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. His performances established him as one of the most prolific young batters in the competition.

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure from Gujarat Titans, Gill was appointed the franchise’s captain ahead of the 2024 IPL season. He has continued in that leadership role and produced another strong campaign in 2026, scoring 732 runs as Gujarat Titans reached the IPL final.

The Gabba Knock That Changed Gill’s Career

Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand in Hamilton on January 31, 2019. His Test debut came against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26, 2020, during India’s memorable 2020-21 tour of Australia.

It was during that series that Gill announced himself on the biggest stage. After impressive contributions earlier in the tour, he scored 91 at the Gabba in Brisbane in the fourth Test. His fearless batting played an important role in India’s historic chase as Ajinkya Rahane’s side defeated Australia by three wickets, winning the series 2-1. The innings became one of the defining early moments of Gill’s international career.

Gill’s Rise As An ODI Star

Gill’s ODI career soon produced several records. In January 2023, he smashed 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad, becoming the youngest player to score an ODI double century. He has also become the fastest batter to reach major ODI run milestones, including 2,000 and 2,500 runs.

He has also collected major individual recognition, including the BCCI Cricketer of the Year award for 2022-23 and 2024-25, reflecting his continued importance to Indian cricket.

From Young Star To India Captain

Gill’s biggest career transition came in 2025, when he was appointed India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s decision to step away from Test cricket. His first major assignment as captain was India’s five-Test tour of England.

Rather than being overwhelmed by the responsibility, Gill delivered one of the most productive Test series of his career. He scored 754 runs in five Tests, including four centuries and a career-best 269. His aggregate was the second-highest by a captain in a Test series, behind Don Bradman’s 810 runs in the 1936-37 Ashes. India and England eventually drew the series 2-2.

Later in 2025, Gill was also handed the ODI captaincy, giving him leadership responsibility in two international formats. His experience as Gujarat Titans captain had already given him a strong foundation for leading at the highest level.

Shubman Gill At 27: Where He Stands Now

Gill enters his 27th year as one of the central figures in Indian cricket. He is currently India’s Test and ODI captain, while Shreyas Iyer leads the T20I side.

His leadership credentials received another boost in 2026 when he guided India to a 3-0 ODI series sweep over Afghanistan, earning his first ODI series victory as India’s captain.

The latest phase of Gill’s career is therefore no longer simply about proving himself as a talented batter. At 27, he is already expected to help shape the next era of Indian cricket. From a 2018 Under-19 World Cup hero to an IPL champion, record-breaking international batter, and now India’s Test and ODI captain, Shubman Gill’s journey has moved remarkably quickly — and his biggest chapter as a leader may only be beginning.
