The first Indian to compete in the World Junior Swimming Championships final, Apeksha Fernandes, placed eighth in the 200m women’s butterfly final in Lima, Peru. The 17-year-old recorded a 2:19.14 and came in last in the Wednesday eight-swimmer final. As the first Indian woman to accomplish so at a world championship, Fernandes had altered her own “Best Indian Time” of 2:18.18 during the heats to advance to the final. Her previous best is a 2:18.39 time from June that is pending approval from the Indian Swimming Federation.
Only when the timing was obtained at the National Aquatics Championships is it regarded as a national record in swimming. As a result, the times recorded at other meets are referred to as the “Best Indian time.” In other results, Sambhavv Rama Rao, who placed 27th overall with a time of 1:55.71, failed to advance to the final because Vedaant Madhavan was disqualified for a false start in the men’s 200m freestyle event heats.
The famous actor R. Madhavan took his Instagram to share a story of Apeksha Fernandes and wrote, “So so proud of you Apeksha…you make us so proud.” The actor’s son Vedaant Madhavan also broke the swimming record and is a great swimmer. The actor is proud of his kid Vedaant Madhavan and Apeksha Fernandes, both of whom have made Indians proud.
