The pace attack during the first test against Australia was led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav. With the experience and skills of these three talented bowlers, India stopped the Australian side to a score of 191 gave India a lead of 53 runs. Even though India now has a vast range of talented young pacers like Navdeep Saini, T. Natarajan and Mohammad Siraj, the team management still decides to go with the experience of these senior pacers.

Bumrah as always was the best in the business. He helped team India take two early wickets. He dismissed both the Australian openers with his amazing spell. Both the wickets were taken by leg before wicket. He gave a very troublesome time to the entire middle order of the Australian batting line-up. He gave the perfect pace support to Ashwin which helped Ashwin take some wickets as well.

The middle-order of Australian line-up was taken care of by Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami. Shami went wicketless in the first innings but Umesh Yadav grabbed 3 wickets to his name. He dismissed the backbone of Australian middle order, Marnus Labuchagne before he could score his half-century. He then took care of the tail-enders with his extreme pace attack. Overall, even though Umesh Yadav only provided his support, his spell was very important during the first innings.
