Without a question, the greatest news in Formula One this week was Sebastian Vettel’s statement that he will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2022 season. The German was called in to replace Robert Kubica at the United States GP in June 2007, and what an era it has been since.
There are several things to consider before making a decision. Vettel now has a wife and small children, who were a major factor in his decision to abandon racing. It would not have been an effortless choice to put the helmet and overalls away.
And of course, he is a man of morals. The driver is now extremely worried about the environment, almost in a hypocritical way given his line of work, but he is a man who takes this seriously.
He is a family man, as stated above, and without a doubt, they had a role in the choice. However, it would still be unclear as to when the choice to call it a day was made. The COVID-19 epidemic was still ravaging the globe at the moment, and with so much of life on pause, Vettel had some time to consider where he was in life and where he wanted to go.
Here’s what Vettel said about the decision:
“The timeline takes us years in the past, so clearly, I didn’t make that choice right away. I told the team that I was going to quit and wouldn’t be continuing, and that was the final choice. However, a lot of thinking went into this, so I believe the time is now for me to pursue other interests. Naturally, I am aware of how serious and dedicated this is, and if you do it, I am confident you should do it well. My goal has always been to win and compete at the front since I don’t get much satisfaction or drive from being here being a part of it.”
