Kom was born in the Indian state of Manipur's rural Kangathei village, Moirang Lamkhai. Kom attended the Moirang Loktak Christian Model High School. She had grown quite interested in running the 400 meters and throwing the javelin. Dingko Singh, a fellow Manipuri, had won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1998. Like others, she was motivated and considered giving boxing a shot. In Imphal, she began her training under the direction of her first coach, K. Kosana Meitei.
