Spreha Chatterjee has been doing a solid job as Maahi in Star Plus‘ and Rajan Shahi’s Anupamaa, especially at a time when the show continues to move in new directions. In daily soaps, nothing really stays the same for too long. Tracks change, equations shift, and sometimes a character behaves very differently from what the audience has seen before, which can easily become confusing for the actor playing it. Spreha, however, approaches it in a more grounded way. She doesn’t try to reinvent Maahi every time the script changes.

She explains it in her own words: “For me, consistency in performance comes from staying true to the character’s foundation so that the audience can believe and connect with the character’s journey.” That base, according to her, becomes the anchor when everything else around the character starts to shift.

When the show recently introduced a leap, and Maahi’s personality began to evolve, she chose to look at it as a continuation rather than a reset. “In a show like Anupamaa, when my character Maahi suddenly shifts after a leap, I focus on keeping her emotional core consistent,” she said. That way, even if Maahi reacts differently now, it doesn’t feel out of place.

She further added, “When Maahi starts standing up for herself, I don’t treat it as a completely new character but see it as growth.” This thought process helps her avoid making the change look forced or sudden on screen.

Spreha also connects Maahi’s present behaviour to her upbringing. “Being Anupamaa’s daughter, she had that strength and values instilled in her character that were now coming out more strongly,” she shared.

For her, adapting to changes is less about doing something dramatic and more about understanding why the character is changing in the first place. “Such a reasonable approach towards the sudden changes and shifts helps me to justify every new layer and adjust my performance accordingly without losing the character’s authenticity.”
