For over two decades, Hiten Tejwani has been one of Indian television’s most dependable actors. Currently winning hearts all over again as Karan Virani in Star Plus’s highly successful reboot Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, Hiten effortlessly balances high-voltage on-screen drama with a grounded real life.
Off-camera, he steps into his most important role—being a father. This Father’s Day, Hiten gets candid about modern parenting, guarding his children’s innocence against the glare of showbiz, and why becoming a father fundamentally transformed him as an actor.
With gruelling daily soap schedules demanding long weeks away from home, maintaining a constant bond with family can be a challenge. For Hiten, the solution lies in deliberate, uncompromised consistency.
“Distance is a part of our profession, but staying emotionally connected is a choice,” Hiten asserts. “I make it a point to check in with my kids every day, even if it’s just a quick call or a funny message. It’s not always about the quantity of time, but the consistency of being present in their lives.”
He notes that his current project constantly mirrors these real-life priorities. “Even while shooting Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, where family relationships are at the heart of the story, I’m constantly reminded of how important it is to stay connected to your loved ones.”
Growing up as the children of popular actors Hiten and Gauri can bring unwarranted public scrutiny. However, Hiten has established a firm boundary to shield his children from the spotlight. “I’ve always believed that my career is public, but my children’s lives don’t have to be,” he notes.
Becoming a father made me more empathetic on screen.
“They know what I do, and they’re proud of it, but I try to give them the freedom to grow up away from the spotlight and enjoy a normal childhood as much as possible. That’s a value I strongly hold on to, irrespective of the popularity that comes with acting.”
When asked how he would react if his children expressed an interest in following his footsteps into the entertainment industry, Hiten’s response is that of a seasoned veteran who respects his medium. “I’d tell them to first understand the craft before chasing the glamour,” Hiten says directly. “Acting is a beautiful profession, but it’s also about patience, discipline, and handling rejection. If they genuinely love it, I’ll support them wholeheartedly.”
“Becoming a father changes the way you look at life. You become more empathetic, more patient, and emotionally aware,” he reflects. “There are certain scenes today that I connect with very differently because of my experiences as a parent. It allows you to tap into deeper, more honest emotions on camera.”
If there is one thing Hiten has realised over the years, it is that no guidebook can prepare you for the beautiful chaos of raising children.
“The hard truth about being a parent is that there are no perfect answers. Every child is different, every situation is different. As parents, we’re learning on the job every day. The best you can do is listen, stay involved, and keep showing up.”
As he looks to the future, his ultimate Father’s Day wish is simple: the luxury of time. “I’d probably want to slow down a little more and spend even more quality time with my children. No matter how much time you give them, as a parent, it always feels like you could give a little more. Returning to Kyunki… has been nostalgic, but it has also reminded me that family remains the most important part of life, both on-screen and off-screen.”
Here’s wishing all our readers Happy Father’s Day!!
