Smita Singh has established herself as a versatile performer, notably remembered for her memorable portrayal of Punpunwali in Bhagyavidhaata. On the occasion of Independence Day, actress Smita Singh shares her deep reflections on true autonomy, cultural identity, responsible citizenship, and her vision for the Indian entertainment industry.
On the true meaning of freedom, she says, “Azadi means the ability of people to choose their own path, leaders, laws and future without being ruled by an outside power. Every person gets to speak, vote, disagree and build. Freedom isn’t just a celebration. It is a responsibility for keeping democracy alive, lifting each other and protecting the next generation’s choices.”
She talks about the colour in the National flag that represents her personality. “For me, the saffron represents India, the ancient Sanatan, which is copied and followed by the entire world.”
Critiquing traditional television tropes, Smita advocates for a shift away from outdated saas-bahu dramas toward inspiring narratives that highlight national achievements and motivate the youth. “The entertainment industry, instead of propagating a foreign agenda, should concentrate on Indian achievements. For the New generation, the Saas Bahu saga is an old story. Neither it is relatable and due to lack of story, it’s not entertaining. The entertainment industry should create new shows which can encourage the new generation to work for the development of the country.”
Drawing from her personal acting experience playing a military officer, she expresses deep gratitude for the sacrifices made by the Indian Armed Forces to safeguard national security. “I once played a soldier in the army. That really made me understand what they go through to keep our country safe. Ever since then, my respect for our armed forces has grown higher every day.”
Smita shares her aspiration to portray Begum Hazrat Mahal, paying tribute to the historic Lucknow leader’s fierce resistance against colonial rule and her efforts to maintain communal unity during the 1857 revolt. “Given an opportunity, I would love to play Begum Hazrat Mahal. A freedom fighter from Lucknow who revolted against the British and refused to surrender. She kept Hindus and Muslims United towards the fight. He was really an iconic Hero.”
