On Friendship Day, popular television star Neil Bhatt, currently winning hearts as the lead in Star Plus’ Mr & Mrs Parshuram, reflected on what true friendship means in the fast-paced world of entertainment. For Neil, genuine relationships are built on honesty, consistency, and a total lack of pretence.
When asked about the friends who keep him grounded despite his star status, Neil shared how much he values unfiltered honesty. “I think those friends are the biggest blessing because they keep you grounded. I have a few friends from the industry and also some who’ve known me from much before I became an actor. Genuine friends never try to impress; they help me grow. If they feel I’m wrong, they’ll tell me straight away without worrying about how I’ll react. Honestly, I value that kind of honesty because it’s very rare. Special friends are the ones who have never bothered about fame and recognition, and have given me true feedback.”
Navigating showbiz can make discerning true intentions difficult, but Neil has a simple litmus test for figuring out who is genuine. “Success attracts a lot of people, but difficult times reveal who genuinely cares about you. I don’t judge friendships by how often we meet, but by how comfortable and honest we can be with each other.”
In an industry where peers often compete for the same roles, maintaining close bonds can be tricky. However, Neil approaches professional rivalries with humility and self-awareness. “I’ve always believed that everyone has their own journey. Competition is part of our profession, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of relationships—and as for me, I’m only competing with myself; this I say with a lot of humility. If a role is meant for you, it will find its way to you. I’ve always been a cheerleader for my friends; I’ve pushed them to achieve what they want.”
Over time, Neil’s perspective on friendship has evolved, moving away from constant availability toward deep mutual understanding. “I feel it’s about trust and consistency. Even if you don’t talk for weeks, you know they’ll be there when it matters. The industry has taught me to appreciate quality over quantity when it comes to relationships. Friendship is more about understanding rather than presence.”
Ultimately, for an actor constantly living in the spotlight, true friendship is a space where you can drop all guards. “A safe space is where you don’t have to perform or pretend. As actors, we’re constantly in front of cameras and people, so it’s refreshing to be with friends where there’s absolutely no pressure to be anyone else. We can laugh, be vulnerable, stay silent, or simply enjoy each other’s company without being judged.
