Romiit Raaj is currently seen as Ranvijay in Star Plus and Rajan Shahi’s popular show Anupamaa, and the actor says stepping into the character has pushed him to explore a completely different side of himself. From undergoing a physical transformation to constantly working on his craft, Romiit believes preparation is an ongoing process for any actor.
Talking about his approach to Ranvijay, Romiit says, “I have consciously changed my voice for Ranvijay. His walk is very different from mine because he carries a certain swag, confidence and attitude. Physically, I have been training extremely hard and lifting heavy weights because I wanted Ranvijay to look strong on camera.”
For the actor, however, playing a character is not limited to physical preparation. He believes that an actor must constantly learn and evolve. “I read books on acting, books written by directors and filmmakers, and autobiographies because you can learn so much from one good book. I also learn tremendously by watching great films and television shows. Every good performance teaches you something — sometimes about what to do, and sometimes about what not to do,” he shares.
Romiit credits his association with filmmaker Rajan Shahi as another important learning experience. Speaking about his understanding of Ranvijay, he says, “When you sit with Rajan Sir, you genuinely want to listen to him and absorb as much as possible because there is always something new to learn.”
According to Romiit, Shahi described Ranvijay as an Angry Young Man who deeply loves his mother but carries immense anger towards his father because he blames him for his sister’s death. Understanding those conflicting emotions helped him approach the character with greater depth.
“Rajan Sir explained Ranvijay to me as an Angry Young Man — someone who deeply loves his mother but carries immense anger towards his father because he blames him for his sister’s death,” he says.
The actor also feels grateful to be part of Anupamaa, describing the experience as something much bigger than just another project. “For me, working on Anupamaa feels like shooting for a big blockbuster film. Every day that I step onto the Anupamaa set, I feel a sense of gratitude. For me, shooting this show is nothing short of a divine blessing.”
For Romiit, the journey is ultimately about continuing to challenge himself. “For me, acting is a continuous journey. You can never say, ‘I know everything.’” With Ranvijay, he hopes to keep discovering new dimensions of his craft and promises audiences that this chapter has only just begun.
