International Men’s Day underscores the necessity of valuing and respecting men’s feelings, just as we do for women. It is imperative that we actively promote gender equality in every sphere of work and life. Senior actor Pankit Thakker, who is presently seen in the role of Chandru in Zee TV’s Saru, produced by Sphere Origins, talks about the significance of the special day.
On the thought of International Men’s Day complementing the goals of International Women’s Day, Pankit states, “While International Women’s Day highlights the need for equity and breaking barriers, International Men’s Day focuses on healthy masculinity and shared responsibility in creating a balanced society. It is about collaboration, not competition. True equality requires strong, self-aware men to stand with strong women. Communication and understanding facilitate open dialogue for a better, more inclusive world.”
On the male role models who have positively influenced his life, the actor avers, “Discipline and integrity were taught by my father. The consistency and reinvention of Mr Amitabh Bachchan has been a masterclass in career longevity and navigating the industry with gravitas. Actors like Irrfan Khan and Manoj Bajpayee embodied substance over hype, prioritising meaningful roles and true artistry. These are the men who inspire a legacy.”
On his thoughts about working together to promote better gender relations and equality,” Pankit shares, “Open dialogue is the most powerful tool. Communication is a key strength, and talking and listening across gender lines without defensiveness are essential. Equality must be modelled in the industry and on screen to create real cultural change.”
Lastly, on one change he would like to see in how society views or talks about men and masculinity, he states, “Society should move away from the rigid definition of ‘toughness.’ True masculinity is about having the emotional intelligence and strength to be vulnerable, to be empathetic, and to connect deeply with others. The idea that ‘men don’t cry’ is damaging. A more expansive, emotionally literate view of manhood should be celebrated—one that embraces wisdom and kindness as strengths.”
Happy International Men’s Day!!
