After making a lasting impression on viewers with her powerful performance in Pushpa Impossible, actress Indraxi Kanjilal is back on television in a striking new avatar. She leads Dangal TV’s newest offering, Sohni – Aur Nahi Koi Honi, produced by DJ’s A Creative Unit.

In an exclusive conversation with IWMBuzz.com, Indraxi opens up about stepping out of her previous role, drawing inspiration from iconic TV history, and why her new character’s message of inner beauty matters now more than ever.

After playing Prarthana in Pushpa Impossible—a character widely loved by audiences—how does it feel to step into a brand-new avatar for Sohni – Aur Nahi Koi Honi?

Playing Prarthana was an incredibly enriching experience because she was such a multi-layered character. She wasn’t strictly positive or negative; she operated in that realistic grey zone, which made her very relatable. I am immensely grateful to the audience for showering her with so much love over the years. Stepping into Sohni’s world feels both exciting and refreshing. It’s a completely new space for me as an actor, and I truly hope the audience welcomes Sohni into their hearts with the same warmth—and hopefully even more love!

While nostalgia serves as a lovely backdrop, I encourage viewers to approach Sohni with a fresh perspective and appreciate her journey for the unique story it is telling.

Looking back at your journey with Pushpa Impossible, what key takeaways or lessons did you bring into your preparation for Sohni?

When I started Pushpa Impossible, I was relatively new to the industry, so those four years were really my training ground. I learned everything from the ground up and gathered invaluable experience. Beyond mastering acting techniques, I learned the importance of holding onto a character’s core and understanding set etiquette.

While Prarthana had a complex, ever-shifting emotional graph, Sohni is entirely different. She is deeply positive, vulnerable, and somewhat underconfident, yet eagerly looking forward to what life has to offer. Her energy is unique, so my primary goal during prep was to fully immerse myself in her mind space and truly make Sohni my own.

Viewers noticed that Sohni’s look carries strong vibes of the iconic Jassi from Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. Since both shows are created by DJ’s A Creative Unit, was this nostalgia intentionally woven into the character design?

Absolutely, there is definitely a shared resonance! I was just a little girl when Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin aired, and I remember being a huge fan of the show. To now play a character that carries a subtle homage to that era feels surreal and deeply gratifying.

While the aesthetic evokes that wonderful sense of nostalgia, I want to emphasise that Sohni is her own person. The show has its own distinct storyline, unique character arcs, and a world tailored for today’s audience. The look pays tribute to the classic, but Sohni brings her own vulnerabilities, flaws, and beauty to the table. I can’t wait for viewers to go on this journey of growth with her.

Can we consider this show a modern take on Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin?

I wouldn’t call it a modern remake. Sohni – Aur Nahi Koi Honi is a unique narrative that stands firmly on its own feet. The writers have crafted a beautiful, independent story filled with rich, well-defined characters. While nostalgia serves as a lovely backdrop, I encourage viewers to approach Sohni with a fresh perspective and appreciate her journey for the unique story it is telling.

How did you feel the very first time you saw yourself in character in front of the mirror?

Honestly, when I got into full costume and makeup, I never saw her as “ugly.” I wasn’t self-conscious for a single second about the oversized glasses or the teeth. At her core, everything about Sohni is beautiful because her heart is so pure. Society might judge her based on superficial standards and label her as unglamorous, but she is so much more than her physical appearance. That realisation was very empowering for me—it reminded me of what truly matters in a human being. I felt immensely proud to step into her shoes.

Television often highlights glamorous aesthetics, but this show focuses heavily on inner beauty, heart, and authenticity. Why is this message crucial for television audiences today?

In today’s digital age, judgment comes far too easily. People make quick, harsh comments based purely on outer appearances because everything is consumed surface-first. This show shifts the focus back to what truly counts: a person’s character, soul, and inner strength. It’s a gentle reminder to society to look beyond external flaws and value an authentic human heart. We hope this message resonates deeply with viewers and brings a positive shift in perspective.
