World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, stands as the most prominent and impactful international event dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues. This vital observance, endorsed by the United Nations, brings together millions of people from diverse cultures and backgrounds around the world in a unified mission to safeguard and revitalize our planet. It acts as a dynamic platform that not only inspires but galvanizes governments, businesses, communities, and individuals alike to take meaningful action and promote sustainable practices. Through workshops, educational initiatives, and community events, this day encourages a collective sense of responsibility to protect natural resources and encourage innovative solutions for environmental challenges. Senior actress Swati Chitnis who is presently seen in the matriarch’s role of Annapurna in Zee TV’s newly launched show Saru talks about small habits creating a sea change in protecting the wellness of the environment.

Swati Chitnis says, “World Environment Day is not just about the planet, for me, it is also about reflecting on the little things we do at home, the everyday habits that may feel convenient but can have lasting consequences. One of the biggest changes I made was in my kitchen.”

Elaborating on his idea at home, Swati says, “I used to pack snacks in plastic dabbas and heat food in plastic containers, not realising the harm it could cause, not just to the environment, but to our health. Over time, I learned that microwaving food in plastic can release toxic chemicals, which leach into what we eat. These toxins accumulate in our bodies and may lead to serious long-term health issues. That realisation was a turning point. My family and I have since made a conscious shift; we have replaced plastic with steel and glass containers and try to avoid plastic use as much as possible. If there is one thing I have come to believe strongly, it is that protecting the environment truly begins at home. This World Environment Day, let us take that first step — let us remove plastic from our kitchens and choose safer, more sustainable alternatives. Our health and our planet will thank us for it.”
