Indian television is often seen as playing second-fiddle to Bollywood or other major film industries in the country. Indian TV shows are watched by a number of people and they will never lose their fame and glory. Having said that, recently, we have been witnessing a new trend on TV. Be it a show like a long-running show like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah or Ekta Kapoor’s path-breaking dramas Kumkum Bhagya and Bhagya Lakshmi, we have seen the makers releasing engaging promos to attract audiences, but at the end of the day, the promos turn out to be dream sequences.

Most television shows approach the world it creates with realism, following the rules of life as the audience knows it. However, when the creative team behind a show is feeling especially adventurous, they’ll take a deep dive into the deep recesses of a character’s mind and showcase their surrealistic abilities in a dream sequence. Dream sequences on television often proved cryptic insight into the mind of the character. While an ill-intended dream sequence can ruin a TV show, a great dream sequence can help elevate a television show to a new level of originality.

The number one rule of storytelling is “show, don’t tell”, and there’s no better way to show what is going on inside a character’s mind without “telling” than a well-placed dream sequence. Recently, Kumkum Bhagya released an amazing promo wherein Ranbir asks Rhea to sign divorce papers as he wishes to stay with Prachi. In the promo, Ranbir reveals to the family that Prachi is pregnant with his child and he wishes to leave the house. This promo was loved by fans and they were excited to finally see Ranbir and Prachi’s reunion. However, their dreams came crashing down as it turned out to be a dream sequence of Ranbir.

Another Balaji Telefilm show, Bhagya Lakshmi also showcased a sequence wherein Balwinder exposes Malishka to be a culprit. With this revelation, Rishi gets angry at Malishka and breaks ties with her. This scene was a dream sequence imagined by the antagonist Malishka.

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has had numerous major sequences which were dream sequences. When Jethalal imagined his son Tappu’s marriage. Tapu Jethalal Gada, who’s school-going, agrees to get married in lieu of a new cycle and despite being against child marriage, his father gives in. Tapu marries a super adorable girl Tina. Tapu gets married with much fuss and all the neighbors attend the wedding. Jethlal’s close friend Taarak is against the wedding and it’s against the law but fails to convince Champaklal Gada. Always of this comes to a conclusive end when it is revealed that the wedding was Jethlal’s dream and nothing else. Earlier, we have often seen Popatlal dreaming about his wedding but alas, he is never married for real in the show.

Well, such dream sequences shown in dramatic promos are just to grab the audience’s attention and increase TRP. This formula is surely working for makers and that’s what matters the most.
