As Sapna Babul Ka… Bidaai completes 18 years, Producer Rajan Shahi reflects on the show that changed the course of his life and redefined Indian television storytelling.

“Bidaai will always be special because it was not just a show — it was the beginning of my dream as a producer,” says Rajan with deep emotion. “After directing for almost 15 years, I wanted to take a leap into production. It wasn’t easy back then because the concept of a technician turning producer was unheard of. But destiny had other plans for me.”

Rajan credits Uday Shankar, then the network head of Star Plus, for recognising his potential and placing his trust in him. “Uday sir believed in me when I was just taking my first step as a producer. He saw the fire in me and gave me the confidence to create something new. I will always remain grateful to him for that faith — he has been my biggest mentor,” Rajan says.

He also expresses gratitude to Vivek Bahl, then programming head at Star Plus, for connecting him with Uday Shankar. “I’ve always had immense respect for Vivek Bahl because he played a crucial role in setting up that meeting. I have a lot of gratitude for him. Sometimes, one meeting, one belief, can change everything in life — that’s what happened with Bidaai,” Rajan shares.

Looking back, Rajan recalls how Bidaai emerged as a game-changer on television. “When we started, TV was dominated by loud, dramatic narratives. I wanted to bring back simplicity, emotions, and relationships that felt real. Bidaai was born out of that honesty. The story of two sisters, Sadhna and Ragini, resonated with audiences because it came straight from the heart.”

The success of Bidaai also became the turning point for his production house, Director’s Kut Production (DKP). “Within two months of Bidaai’s launch, Star Plus went back to being the No. 1 channel. That was a proud moment — not just for me but for everyone associated with the show. Bidaai gave identity and credibility to DKP, and from that day till now, the journey has been full of gratitude,” he shares.

Rajan fondly remembers the team that stood by him through it all. “The actors, the writers, the technicians — each one poured their soul into the show. Eighteen years later, many of them are still connected with DKP. That bond means more than any award or rating ever could.”

Over the years, Rajan’s banner has gone on to deliver several hit shows, including Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke, and the widely acclaimed Anupamaa.

Speaking about Anupamaa’s success, Rajan says, “Anupamaa has been a blessing. The way the show struck an emotional chord with audiences across generations has been overwhelming. It’s not just a story about a woman’s strength — it’s about every individual who rediscovers themselves through life’s challenges. I think that honesty in storytelling once again connected with the audience, just like Bidaai did years ago.”

Today, DKP continues to dominate television with Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Anupamaa, the latter co-produced with his mother, Deepa Shahi, under Shahi Production Pvt. Ltd. “Working with my mother is a blessing. She is my strength and inspiration — every show we make is a reflection of the values she has instilled in me,” Rajan shares warmly.

As Bidaai turns 18, Rajan reflects with a heart full of gratitude. “Eighteen years ago, a dream took shape — and that dream continues to grow. Bidaai was, and will always remain, the soul of Director’s Kut Production. I will forever be thankful to the people who believed in me then, and to the audience who made it what it became.”
